Monkeys in
Vietnam?
yep,
some were spotted flinging themselves through the air
yesterday, and there even some evil monkeys in the herd.
yep, john p, hoowah and their buddy reg joined us for a
ride w/ fellow s ocron, couching tiger, and a smattering of
our friends.
you might have seen different shots
of this already:
cool bike, but not really the ideal
build for traipsing about in the woods, eh hoowah?
for those of you who know the trails
in milford (aka vietnam), there are always good rock
drops to find. and sometimes you find new ones. here are
jason and ian pulling the trigger on a nice-sized drop
that we just found yesterday. note that reg is standing
under the rock in ian's pic:
jason's turn:
here's ian out on the powerline
section, finding a nice one:
i finally tried that one after
watching a friend do it this summer, and couching tiger
had his bullit's 8" risse soak it up appropriately as
well, and it made a neat pinging noise too
stay tuned for part 2

ride report, part
2
the
original post had too many pics for the RM board, so i
cut it in two pieces. here is the exciting conclusion:
nam is not all rocks, there are some architects
at work too. here's jason, riding a freakin' hairy
ladder:
it may not look too nasty via CRT, but
it's really skinny and probably about 9-10' up at the
high point.
there is a nice drop just to the
left of it, and here is reg showing us how it's done:
btw, the foes is a sweet rig. even
i could pull a ~5 second manual on the thing, and
that's saying something.
here is reg on the
spine line, another fun powerline place to play (thanks
to Ocron for showing me this one, hadn't seen it
before). he did a sweet manual off the rock, and
manualed on the landing too. nice!
here's one more, the rock which
earlier claimed Ocron's swingarm and shoulder. you can't
really tell from this photo, but it's got a semi-crappy
run in, and you really need to be precise w/ where you
land the bike. and it's a good 6-7' drop on top of that.
well done.
at this point we ran into a few other
riders (including dane, who was going off w/ his K2
hardtail, including one really big drop which no one
else even considered), and it was funny seeing one guy
go off the pictured drop w/ his TMX, and then ian
followed w/ his FSR. the amount of punishment he dealt
that frame and suspension (air rear shock, flexy little
4" singlecrown manitou fork) was unreal; jason was
running a 5" z1. they made all us dual crown guys look
pretty weak
anyway, we made our way to the other
side, and hit some more cool sections and drops. i
finally did a section heretofore known as the "chick
drop", because there was a pic from pinkbike (see below)
showing some woman named molly dropping it, when no one
i regularly ride w/ had the sack to launch it yet. i
brightened the pic so you can see it a bit clearer.
jason recorded some cool vid footage
of the shenanigans, but i am not sure of his bandwidth
so i can't give out the URL yet. but i'll check to see
if he's cool w/ that and give ya the goods.
that's about it. a good ride all-around. we'll
have to get a monkey convention @ lynn woods when it
opens up.

Niiiiice! Looks like a good time was had by all.
It's been a while since a ride report wasn't accompanied
with an injury report as well. Good to see. Can't
wait for that next shipment of rocks to
arrive.

Sweet
pics Narlus
I can't wait, 4 more days till spring
break then I can finally finish fixing my rig which has
been secluded in the darkness of my basement . I'm definately going to try to hit Nam as
much as I can. Have to love that place!
BTW,
what is the parking situation at Vietnam? Is it still OK
to park at the business parks?

RE:
Nam
Excellent ride yesterday! Man I've gotta lay off
the beer and donuts The Risse handled the drop fine, the shuttle
just slammed forward which generates a sound almost
exactly the same as that of a Kooka crank arm splitting
in half lengthwise. Ugh, nasty.
I doctored the
shuttle with a small rubber "bumper" placed inside the
front of the shuttle between the shuttle and the shuttle
bolt. It takes up the ~1/4" and should compress and
settle in at maybe ~1/8" on a really big hit, leaving
the shuttle out a bit and still not maxed out in the low
position.
The ride just reiterated that it isn't
the bike, at all, that makes the difference.

vietnam is a
pretty sick place
didn't
pull any of the larger drops.
that evil is
definately not the build for pedaling the trails,
especially when your 6'3" and realize that some boston
buggah cut the seat post down a lot.
shoulda
checked that before i left i guess.
the imperial
feels tight, and corners great, but not going uphill
with a shiver. felt nice on the descents and the smaller
drops, and some of the smaller jumps in the trails.
anyhow, met a bunch of cool people, had a
great time and looking foreward to the next meeting.
shuttle mount A anyone? T

I got down to Trumbull a couple
times last year and you're right, it was a lot of fun.
I'm definitely planning on at least a few trips down
there this year. What are the conditions like right
now?
